Slag, also can be called slag dissolution. It is a kind of melt floating on the surface of metal and other liquid substances during pyrometallurgical process. Its composition is mainly consisted of oxide, such as silicon dioxide, alumina, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and often contains sulfide and a small amount of metal.
According to different metallurgical processes, slag can be divided into smelting slag, refining slag and synthetic slag. According to the properties of slag, it also can be divided into alkaline slag, acid slag and neutral slag. Slag plays an important role in metal smelting process, ensuring product quality and metal recovery rate. High phosphorus slag can be used as fertilizer, and the slag containing vanadium and titanium can be used as raw materials for extracting vanadium and titanium respectively. Some slag can be used for making slag cement, slag brick, slag glass, etc.
